The speaker I kept reaching for — because the screen is actually useful

A few weeks with the WiiM Sound in a normal UK flat: hi-res streaming, room tuning, and a 1.8-inch touch panel that makes day-to-day listening feel effortless.

Why this one kept coming up

I was tired of speakers that only make sense when your phone is in your hand. Either you pay premium-brand money, or you end up with a Bluetooth box that isn’t really smart at all.

The WiiM Sound kept showing up while I was comparing options around £299 — the same UK RRP as Apple’s HomePod (2nd gen), as noted by What Hi-Fi?. What I wanted was simple: an on-device display, hi-res streaming, and room correction without rebuilding the whole house around one brand.

So it lived with us through the usual chaos — brick walls, a bay window, a kitchen that eats bass. Here’s what actually mattered.

What stood out once it was plugged in

The headline for me wasn’t raw loudness — it was not needing my phone for every skip. The 1.8-inch panel shows what’s playing, volume and inputs. Small on paper; in practice it’s the difference between a speaker you use and one you forget.

Under the fabric, it’s a clean 2-way layout:

App when you want finer tweaks; the top screen covers most daily skips and volume.
Worth knowing: AirPlay 2 isn’t on the protocol list for this model — fine if you stream Spotify, Tidal or Qobuz; worth a pause if your whole home is AirPlay-first.

What most people miss when they choose

What most Brits don’t realise about this key detail when choosing — how quickly this device has entered the everyday lives of people over 50. More and more of them talk about it, share their personal experience and recommend it to friends and relatives. What once seemed like just another novelty is now quietly becoming part of the daily routine for thousands of people across the country — and turning out far more useful and practical than many expected.

Smart tech isn’t only for the young — more households over 50 are making streaming speakers part of the daily mix.

Would I buy it again?

A strong fit if

  • You want hi-res and a real display without jumping to a £450 speaker
  • You stream Spotify, Tidal, Qobuz or Google Cast
  • Your room needs a bit of EQ help — RoomFit delivered for us
  • You like couch control with the bundled remote

Look elsewhere if

  • AirPlay 2 is essential for your household
  • You need always-listening Alexa or Siri in the speaker itself
  • You already run Sonos and want seamless grouping with it

For our house, the mix of screen + streaming + tuning felt like the sweet spot at £299 — daily use that just works, without the premium-brand premium.

Questions before checkout

Yes — that’s how we used it most days, alongside Tidal Connect and Google Cast.

Yes — two units can pair for true stereo, and you can group more for multiroom around the house.

Standard UK delivery is free on orders £99+ (this speaker qualifies). Returns: up to 60 days via Audio Volt — request an RMA; opened items may incur a restocking fee under their terms. Klarna may be available at checkout.
